Indaba in Johannesburg

We aim to explore various topics, such as the newest trends in the global re/insurance sector, the evolving role of claims, the influence of artificial intelligence on our industry, the potential of weight-loss medications, and the challenge of attracting and retaining top talent in our companies, among other subjects.

This year, we are thrilled to celebrate a significant milestone at the Indaba. In 2025, Swiss Re Africa proudly commemorates 75 years of pioneering reinsurance operations on the continent. Risk without borders: Insurance in the age of uncertainty

Paul's early experiences in South Africa as an actuarial analyst set the stage for his career in insurance and reinsurance. The region, a hotbed for innovation, continues to make an excellent springboard for an international insurance career. While risks have changed over the past three decades, some things haven't: partnerships between insurance industry stakeholders remain critical to closing protection gaps and boosting societal resilience.

13:00-13:40

Emerging risks: digitalization & artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies are transforming industries, creating both new opportunities and new vulnerabilities. AI can improve efficiency, enhance risk assessment, strengthen compliance, and reduce human error – but unintended consequences are already emerging. From potential business interruption and liability claims to increased dependency on Big Tech platforms, the risk landscape is shifting rapidly.

The weight is over: metabolic health and the impact of GLP-1 drugs

Widespread use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs to treat obesity could reduce cumulative mortality in the general population by up to 6.4% in the US and 5.1% in the UK by 2045, Swiss Re’s modelling projects. We anticipate mortality reductions in cardiovascular disease (CVD), and lower morbidity in a range of other conditions, if clinical trial results are replicated in the real world. This has significant implications for Life and Health insurance portfolios. However, GLP-1 drugs seem unlikely to be the sole solution to societal metabolic ill-health.

14:40-15:10

Global claims trends impacting African insurance markets

We will delve into the challenges behind the increase of severe weather events, geopolitical uncertainties, inflation, supply chain disruption, societal shifts, PFAS and microplastics. Insurers need to navigate these complexities in a shifting risk landscape. The close cooperation between Underwriting and Claims to tackle these challenges is key!
