The weight is over: metabolic health and the impact of GLP-1 drugs Widespread use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs to treat obesity could reduce cumulative mortality in the general population by up to 6.4% in the US and 5.1% in the UK by 2045, Swiss Re’s modelling projects. We anticipate mortality reductions in cardiovascular disease (CVD), and lower morbidity in a range of other conditions, if clinical trial results are replicated in the real world. This has significant implications for Life and Health insurance portfolios. However, GLP-1 drugs seem unlikely to be the sole solution to societal metabolic ill-health. |
