It is rare that an artist, even those who are lauded with museum shows and critical acclaim, ascends to the kind of celebrity status film stars and rock icons more often reach. Not only did Warhol become a bona fide celebrity though, he was also partly responsible for inventing the very idea.
The idea of a personal brand – that people could be products too, now familiar concepts in the PR and marketing industries – ran through his work, from the self-made television shows and Factory artist colony to the analogies made between famous faces and familiar household logos in his many serial paintings.
