Description

It was only much later in his career, himself by then a major celebrity, that Warhol actually met Liz Taylor. This work, one of a series of screenprints made by the artist of the Hollywood actress, each in a different lurid shade of paint, is in essence a piece of fan art. This is Warhol depicting a hero of his, using a tightly cropped studio publicity shot as the source image. Yet Warhol was far from naïve, he was also interested in the star power that propelled him to feel this way about a stranger, how a face had become not only iconic, but a brand too, a logo, used to sell not just films and products and but the very idea of desire.
