About the event

Europe remains a flood hotspot with insured flood losses at USD 11 billion, more than half the global total of USD 20bln. There have been four multi-billion flood loss events in Europe since 2021 and three of those were in 2024.

The flash flood in Valencia was the costliest flood event globally in 2024 causing economic losses of USD 9 billion. The floods caused by storm Boris in September in Italy, Austria and Central/Eastern Europe brought an estimated loss of Euro 2.5 billion. In the Gulf region flood marked the country's most expensive insurance loss event ever, totalling USD 8 billion economic losses, disrupting operations at Dubai's airport, the world's busiest.

What can insurers learn from these major flood events of 2024? How can advanced data modelling enable insurers to better understand the impact of floods?
