Once a year, S&P Dow Jones Indices review their Dow Jones Sustainability™ Indices (DJSI) – a renowned family of indices evaluating the sustainability performance of companies, based on environmental, social and economic factors. Along with the new composition of the DSJI a well-recognized industry ranking is published.
The number of insurers participating in the assessment increased from 79 to 129 compared to 2019 (+63%), reflecting the increased importance and focus on ESG ratings. Being represented in the DJSI is an important consideration for investors and can therefore impact the company's cost of capital.
In 2020, Swiss Re scored 86 points, an increase of 5 points, and ranks 5th overall, after being in 4th position last year. Swiss Re is the only reinsurer within the top 10.
- Swiss Re's score in the Social dimension remained unchanged
- Environmental dimension improved by 10%pts
- Governance & Economic dimension improved by 7%pts
There is a tight race at the top of the ranking list; with 86 points Swiss Re are just 1 point behind the 3rd rank and 4 points below the top score.
Reto Schnarwiler, Head Group Sustainability, commented: "We have further improved our score and are recognized as the leading reinsurer by DJSI. Our ambition continues to be among the top 3."
