Article information and share options
Swiss Re’s Motor Bodily Injury Landscape Report 2025 offers both a comprehensive and comparative analysis of motor bodily injury trends across 15 European countries. The report shares updated data and insights on compensation trends within these markets through to 2025.
As part of the report, Swiss Re's claims experts calculated the compensation for two illustrative scenarios, a severely injured car accident victim and a fatality claim, based on each jurisdiction's compensation system. These examples are designed to highlight the differences in compensation levels across the countries reviewed.
This overview highlights the significant variation in claim cost across the fifteen European countries reviewed for our report. The differences are striking, both in terms of the total compensation awarded and how the individual components of the settlement are distributed.
For the tetraplegic scenario, the cost of care or “Assistance” emerges as the dominant element of compensation, reflecting the long-term and intensive support required in such cases. In the fatality scenario, loss of earnings constitutes the largest portion of the settlement, however there are exceptions, where compensation for pain and suffering dominates. These variations are largely shaped by case law and legislation, though economic factors play a substantial role as well.
