Julia Bielicki is currently a consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention and Control at the University of Basel Children’s Hospital, and heads the hospital’s Paediatric Research Centre, engaged in several large-scale national and international projects. She is also a Professor of Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the Centre for Neonatal and Paediatric Infection, City St George’s, University of London.

Julia’s research focuses on observational and interventional studies that aim to improve the use of antibiotics to treat neonates and children – in the light of an increasing burden of antimicrobial resistance and the need to conserve antibiotics for future generations. She has worked on developing models that allow optimal use of routine microbiological data to select empiric treatment regimens and is currently involved in several strategic randomized trials investigating optimal antibiotic use in children suffering from pneumonia, and in neonates with sepsis.

Julia has a particular interest in advancing trial design to generate insights with high clinical impact for antibiotic use and prescribing practices as well as approaches to infection prevention and control in neonatal and paediatric clinical settings. To date she has authored or co-authored over 100 papers and book chapters.

Julia obtained her medical degree from the University of Cambridge in 2003, her board accreditation in Paediatrics in 2009, her Master of Public Health (Health Services Research) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2011 and her board accreditation in Infectious Diseases in 2017.
