Bhavani Shankar is Professorial Research Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Food, University of Sheffield. In the past he has held appointments at SOAS University of London, University of Reading and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. A native of Chennai, India, Professor Shankar was educated at the University of Madras and Jawaharlal Nehru University, and obtained his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Professor Shankar is an applied economist working on research areas at the intersection of food, nutrition and health. His research interests include sustainable diets, the role of agriculture and food systems in enabling better nutrition and health, analysis of economic drivers of over and under nutrition and food and nutrition policy evaluation. Much of his work is of an interdisciplinary nature, conducted in collaboration with nutritionists, health scientists, geographers and environmental scientists. Prominent past work include analysis of tradeoffs between health, environmental and economic dimensions of palm oil in South East Asia, market interventions to promote equitable access to fruit and vegetables in India, and evaluation of healthy eating policies in Europe.

Professor Shankar’s recent work has been funded by the Wellcome Trust, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, The UK Government and the European Commission, among others. From 2011 to 2015 he was Managing Editor of Food Policy, a multidisciplinary Elsevier journal. He is currently an academic editor for PLoS One, review editor for Frontiers in Sustainable Food and serves on the editorial advisory boards of Global Food Security and Food Policy.
