Schütte's work defies any attempt of summary: the artist can only constant is his joyful inconsistency. Nevertheless, he is perhaps best known for the architectural models he has been making since graduating Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1981, and the sculptural busts and drawn portraiture he started to introduced from the early 1990s.

Schütte says he seeks equilibrium in his work, so where the models have all the exact precision of the architecture studio, the sculptures are expressionistic and ooze personality. What unites them however is the creeping melancholia that sweeps the work, a darkness of ghostly houses and strange faces reminiscent from fairytales, one that is heavy here however in cultural satire and pointed study of the human condition.
