Sol Lewitt belongs to a generation of artists that redefined art in the 1960s and built up a sustantial ouevre during his 45 years of creativty activity. Lewitt is famous for the broad range of techniques and media he deployed as well as for his unstinting pursuit of innovative processes, especially drawing directly on walls resulting in "wall drawings". Although he worked extensively on drawing and printmaking, he is usually considered to be primarily a sculptor. Lewitt's most characteristic sculpture works are based on connected open cubes and have titles like "Modular Wall Structure" and "Double Modular Cube".
