What makes Beijing, Beijing? Or Los Angeles, Los Angeles? What makes São Paolo feel so different from Rio de Janeiro?

Morris' work, which encompasses both geometric abstract painting and highly stylised pseudo-documentary films, seeks the answer. Morris is not interested in architecture per se (although building design plays an important role in her work), or differing national and municipal cultures (despite her filmic portraits of individuals). Instead her work seeks to distil the topology – the spatial essence – of a place.

The paintings, blocks of colour with thick lines differentiating a wide variety of basic shapes, form abstract maps that serve no practical use provide a sensorial guidance instead. Morris distils the idea of place, peeling back its layers, to reveal the essence of a city.
