Description

In this grouping of three photographs by Shen Wei, relationships are created between elements of nature and architecture, and different life stages are explored. Pear Tree depicts a tree in full blossom, springing to life to provide a moment of unrestrained beauty within a walled courtyard. In Twisted Tree, the focus on a solid trunk and twining branches suggests slow and steady growth. The central image, Chamber, locates us in old Beijing, with its ornate timber and iron detailing. A single, large bubble hangs suspended above the door, free and light but incredibly fragile. These contrasts between nature and architecture, permanence and fragility give Shen Wei’s photographs their particular contemplative appeal and depth.
