The woven map in "Where Do You Come From" (2013) presents us with a familiar image and also poses a puzzling challenge. Our earliest education in geography teaches us our "place" in the world; early on we understood our relationships to other nations from studying the world map. By weaving two store-bought maps together, the artist turns everything inside out and back to front.

This work asks where we have come from and encourages us to ponder the effects of a "global village": where exactly is "home", and what is the real meaning of nationhood in the twenty-first century? Valamanesh doesn't set out to dictate the answers, but rather to playfully ask the questions.
