Description

The American Frank Stella became known for his "shaped canvases" in the 1960s. These were abstract paintings whose symmetrically positioned compositions followed the outline of the uneven support. Stella later relaxed this rigorous approach and made his colours and shapes more dynamic, until they eventually spread into the room as reliefs. The series of pictures in which overlapping circular shapes almost seem to begin pulsating constitutes an important intermediate stage.
