Shark Bay is the westernmost point of the Australian continent and was the first area in Australia to be granted world heritage listing in 1991, largely due to its marine life. Trent Parke, the only Australian to be a member of the Magnum Photos cooperative, visited Shark Bay in 2006 and captured this serendipitous moment. Shark Bay (2006) depicts a truly Australian scene – emus wandering amongst the Denham Seaside Tourist Village – with the sky and ground both sharp in light and evocative of heat.

The emu, known to be the largest bird native to Australia, is an animal of significance both to modern and Indigenous Australians. This delightful image celebrates these creatures and their home, an area of great environmental significance.
