Description

A striped pink and purple wall painting provides the vibrant and lively setting for Fleury's companion piece − a light sculpture in the unusual shape of a large clump of giant crystals, inside which glow red, yellow, green and blue colours. This fun and life-affirming sculpture looks like it might have jumped out of a cartoon. What is it doing here? Did it arrive from another world?

I'm influenced by spirituality. It's like art or fashion - you can never say it doesn't affect you.

Fleury is interested in new age philosophy and is fascinated by phenomena for which there are no certain explanations. (She apparently believes in UFOs.)

I'm always dealing with the superficiality of things, but I try to do it in a deeper way.

In many ways, this work is very different in style and content to the work for which Fleury is best known. Her previous sculptures and installations − featuring shoes, bags, huge fake fingernails − have explored the fun, humour, banality and silliness of fashion and celebrity culture, and respond to how people package these accoutrements of consumerism and sex, class, fashion and personality. However, the idea of what we see is what we get links all her work together. As she says: "I'm always dealing with the superficiality of things, but I try to do it in a deeper way."
