Six portraits – of people indigenous to the lands of South Africa, Australia, India, Fiji, Japan and Ethiopia – were chosen to acknowledge the shared history of colonialism experienced by Australia and other countries during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They are also a celebration of the resilience of humanity. Taken from the artist's archives of 19th-century postcards, the images are printed onto silver canvas.
The depicted individuals represent the connection between 'old' and 'new' worlds, and the complexities of history. With 'Australia' in the centre, the series locates Australia's history alongside that of other countries, mostly from the surrounding region, and encourages us to think about the universality of human spirit and survival.
