2'800 miles, 4 people, 1 boat
On June 12th, the Pacific Discovery crew began their adventure to cross the Pacific Ocean in a row boat not much larger than a car. Starting in Monterey Bay and ending in Hanalei Bay, Kauai, the "World's Toughest Row" spans 2'800 miles of unfettered, wild ocean.
Their goal? To test their risk limits and resiliency under extreme endurance conditions, and help shine a light on mental health. They have pledged to raise £100'000 for Mind, a UK mental health charity.
During their record-breaking 34 day journey, the crew endured battles with seasickness, sleep deprivation, unimaginable weather conditions, and both physical and mental anguish. It was the mental aspect of this challenge, and going through the pandemic, which struck a chord with the team and inspired their decision to shine a light on mental health. One in four people are affected by some sort of mental health challenge each year, and this has been worsened by the isolation, bereavement, loss of income and anxiety caused by the pandemic.
