Balz was appointed to the role of Head Cat Perils at Swiss Re in December 2023. In this role he leads Swiss Re's in-house catastrophe model development that provides the basis for the company's catastrophe underwriting.
He is not new to cat modeling as he joined Swiss Re in 2005 as an earthquake specialist in Cat Perils and held various roles during his 11 year tenure in that team. Before rejoining Cat Perils in 2023, he held different roles in Swiss Re's P&C business, heading P&C Treaty Underwriting for Canada and English Caribbean at Swiss Re Canada from 2016 to 2020, and then as Head of P&C risk management and Chief Risk Officer EMEA from 2020 to 2023.
Prior to joining Swiss Re, he oversaw consulting services for the Latin America region of Geomechanics International Inc., a US-based consultancy for the energy sector.
Dr. Grollimund holds a Diploma in Earth Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, as well as M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Geophysics from Stanford University in California.
