About the Role

As a Senior Application Engineer, you will be at the heart of designing and delivering robust, enterprise-grade applications that power Swiss Re's Life & Health Reinsurance business. You'll collaborate with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Architects across global teams to craft solutions that are not only technically sound but strategically aligned with business goals. This is a role where your engineering depth, your curiosity, and your ability to lead will all be put to work — every single day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement end-to-end application and product lifecycle solutions, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across enterprise systems

  • Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Architects to translate business requirements into pragmatic, future-proof technical designs

  • Assess and manage technical risk, prioritize non-functional requirements, and champion engineering best practices across the team

  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence

  • Drive cloud-native development on platforms such as Azure, contributing to the evolution of modern, microservices-based architectures

  • Contribute to AI-driven development practices, leveraging frontier AI models to enhance the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and product delivery

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, ensuring smooth, automated delivery of high-quality software using tools like Maven and Git

  • Engage across global, cross-functional teams — both internal and external — to align on solutions, share knowledge, and deliver outcomes collaboratively

  • Challenge requirements constructively, listen to the broader vision, and implement realistic, well-reasoned designs that balance innovation with pragmatism

  • Contribute to technical research and feasibility studies, bringing structured analytical thinking and creative problem-solving to complex challenges

We are the Global L&H Reinsurance Engineering team — a passionate group of technologists dedicated to building enterprise-grade IT solutions for Swiss Re's Reinsurance business unit. Our team brings together deep technical expertise and a genuine curiosity for the reinsurance domain, enabling us to engineer solutions that truly make a difference.

About You

You are a hands-on, outcome-driven engineer with a passion for solving hard problems and a genuine commitment to quality. You bring both the technical depth to architect complex systems and the interpersonal skills to inspire and collaborate across cultures and geographies. You're energized by change, resilient in the face of setbacks, and always looking for ways to grow — and to help those around you grow too.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering with strong fundamentals in Java, data structures, algorithms, and architectural patterns

  • Extensive hands-on experience with Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture in enterprise environments

  • Proven expertise in REST API and service design, with a solid understanding of enterprise system integration

  • Cloud-native application development experience, particularly with Azure, including deployment, operations, and modern DevOps practices

  • Proficiency with CI/CD tooling including Maven, Git, and automated pipeline management

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Experience with front-end technologies such as React JS, Angular, TypeScript, or JavaScript

  • Familiarity with ORM frameworks and RDBMS technologies

  • Experience working in agile, cross-functional, and globally distributed teams across complex organizational contexts

  • Ability to leverage AI frontier models to enhance product development and SDLC workflows

  • Understanding of insurance or reinsurance business concepts and domain knowledge

  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills, with a track record of contributing to technical research and feasibility studies

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English, with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels

  • A growth mindset with a commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement

  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to navigate complexity with confidence and adaptability


Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.
