Senior Java Engineer

Location: Bangalore, India

Are you a seasoned Java engineer who thrives on building robust, scalable systems that power global business operations? Do you want to work at the intersection of enterprise engineering, cloud-native architecture, and emerging AI capabilities? If you're passionate about crafting backend solutions that truly matter — this is your opportunity to make a significant and lasting impact at Swiss Re.

About the Role

As a Senior Java Engineer on the ODS-P platform, you'll be at the heart of designing, developing, and modernising enterprise-grade backend systems that serve a global user base. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where your engineering expertise will shape the technical direction of a cloud-native platform deeply integrated with critical business workflows. You'll collaborate with talented cross-functional teams, contribute to meaningful architectural decisions, and help drive the evolution of the platform — including exciting AI-enabled backend capabilities that are redefining what's possible in enterprise engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop high-quality backend services and microservices using Java and Spring Boot, ensuring scalability, security, and long-term reliability
  • Enhance and modernise existing enterprise Java applications, driving technical improvements and systematically reducing technical debt
  • Build and maintain REST APIs and event-driven integrations that connect complex enterprise systems seamlessly and efficiently
  • Contribute to architecture design and key technical decisions through an Architectural Decision Record (ADR)-driven approach, influencing the platform's long-term strategic direction
  • Work with messaging and event-driven systems such as Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, and Kafka to enable resilient, asynchronous workflows at scale
  • Collaborate in agile, cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end solutions that meet both business and technical objectives
  • Conduct thorough code reviews and actively mentor fellow engineers, fostering a culture of quality, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning
  • Champion engineering standards, ensuring systems consistently meet the highest benchmarks for security, performance, and reliability
  • Contribute to AI-enabled backend capabilities, including API integrations, automation pipelines, and GenAI-based features that push the boundaries of the platform

About the Team

ODS-P (Operational Data Store – Pricing) is one of Swiss Re's most strategically significant platforms, serving a dual purpose at the core of the company's pricing and reporting infrastructure. It acts as both the IFRS+ costing calculation engine and the central pricing data repository — calculating, validating, storing, and processing critical pricing data across L&H (Life & Health Reinsurance), P&C Re (Property & Casualty Reinsurance), and CorSo (Corporate Solutions) business lines.

The platform calculates and stores pricings for the entire Swiss Re Group — spanning P&C and L&H contracts for Reinsurance, CorSo, and Life & Health — making it a truly company-wide system with global reach and deep business impact. Built to the highest standards of security, compliance, and reliability, ODS-P is a cloud-native, enterprise-grade platform that integrates with multiple enterprise systems and underpins Swiss Re's ability to price, calculate, and report at scale. Joining this team means working on a platform that sits at the very heart of Swiss Re's business — where engineering excellence directly enables global financial operations.

About You

You are a technically strong, self-driven engineer with a genuine passion for clean code, thoughtful system design, and continuous improvement. You bring a collaborative spirit and a strong sense of ownership — comfortable navigating complexity, leading technical conversations, and delivering results in a fast-paced agile environment. You communicate clearly, solve problems analytically, and find real satisfaction in helping those around you grow and succeed.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in Java backend development, with a strong track record of delivering production-grade, enterprise-scale systems
  • Deep expertise in Spring Boot, microservices architecture, and REST API design, with the ability to make sound, well-reasoned architectural decisions
  • Hands-on experience with databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, or similar technologies, including data modelling and performance optimisation
  • Proven experience with messaging and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus) in complex enterprise environments
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and a strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Experience with Kubernetes and containerisation for deploying and managing microservices at scale
  • Domain knowledge in Insurance or Reinsurance, enabling faster alignment with business context and workflows
  • Experience working with Open Liberty application server
  • Exposure to AI-enabled backend capabilities, including GenAI APIs, automation frameworks, or LLM integrations
  • A strong instinct for code quality and system design, with experience driving technical standards and best practices across engineering teams

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.
