Location: Cape Town, WC, ZA
Are you a curious, analytically minded graduate ready to launch your career at the intersection of risk, reinsurance, and global finance? This is your chance to gain hands-on, meaningful experience within a world-leading reinsurance group — working across multiple legal entities and collaborating with an international team spanning continents. If you thrive on complexity, love learning, and want your work to matter from day one, read on.
About the Role
This 12-month internship offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in all facets of reinsurance risk management. You'll be an active contributor — not just an observer — supporting the Risk Management Function for Swiss Re Europe (SRE), its UK Branch (SRE UK), and Swiss Re Africa (SRAf). From regulatory reporting to risk frameworks and board-level presentations, you'll be involved in work that shapes how a global reinsurer understands and manages its risk landscape.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to managing and monitoring the operational risk framework of SRAf (including Risk Control Self-Assessment process, analysis and resolution of operational events and issues and mitigation actions), and document material changes to any aspects of the risk profile.
- Contribute to SRAf's Own Risk and Solvency Assessment ("ORSA") process. This includes being involved both in the quantitative and qualitative aspects feeding into the process.
- Support in completing regulatory requests such as questionnaires/surveys across SRE, SRE UK and SRAf as required.
- Contribute to the quarterly risk reports presented to the SRE, SRE UK and SRAf Management Committee and Board of Directors.
- Support with maintaining the Risk Radar for SRE UK and SRAf.
- Provide support to thematic reviews performed by the EMEA RM team.
- Provide support on project management for specific initiatives.
- Champion a culture of risk awareness among staff by questioning and engaging with them in their daily work.
About the Team
Join a highly motivated, dynamic, and international Risk Management team with colleagues based across London, Zurich, Luxembourg, Munich, Bratislava, and Cape Town. This is a team that brings together diverse backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets to deliver a broad range of capabilities to our business partners.
We value a good sense of humour, genuine inclusion, care for one another, and a collaborative spirit. We give honest feedback with integrity, support each other's growth, and bring energy and purpose to everything we do.
About You
You bring intellectual curiosity, a collaborative and fast-learning mindset, and the drive to make a real contribution. You're comfortable navigating complexity and ambiguity, and you communicate with clarity and confidence. You take ownership of your work, ask smart questions, and approach challenges with creativity and resilience.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and present complex data clearly and concisely.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to summarise complex issues for a range of audiences including senior stakeholders.
- Experience with data tools or software such as Excel, PowerPoint, or risk management platforms.
- Project coordination or organisational experience, whether academic, professional, or extracurricular.
This role is offered on the basis of an 12-month temporary contract, with an expected start date on 1st of September 2026. The gross monthly salary for this role is 9 000 ZAR full time.
Our interns have a hybrid work model where the expectation is that they will be in the office at least four days per week.
Preference will be given to Employment Equity candidates.
