Java Engineer - Database as a Service (DBaaS)

About the Role
Join our Database as a Service (DBaaS) team and help evolve a core platform used across Swiss Re. We provide secure, stable, and easy-to-use database services with a strong focus on automation and self-service, supporting both private and public cloud environments.
We are looking for a Java Engineer who enjoys solving engineering problems, improving existing systems, and building reliable backend services.
You will work as part of a collaborative engineering team responsible for developing and modernizing our DBaaS platform. The role is primarily hands-on, contributing to implementation, code reviews, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement while working closely with experienced engineers across the team.
What You Will Do
Engineering & Delivery
- Develop and maintain backend services forming the DBaaS platform
- Work with and improve an existing Java codebase
- Contribute to incremental refactoring and modernization efforts
- Participate in migration towards Spring Boot-based services
- Participate in code reviews and maintain high code quality
- Troubleshoot issues and contribute to production support
- Collaborate closely with database engineers and other engineering teams
Platform Improvement
- Contribute to the design and implementation of new features
- Participate in technical discussions and solution design
- Support end-to-end delivery from implementation through testing and operation
- Help improve system reliability, maintainability, and automation
- Participate in agile ceremonies and backlog refinement
- Learn from experienced engineers while gradually taking ownership of features and components
About You

You will join a highly skilled, dedicated, and cross-functional engineering team located between Bratislava and Zürich within Global Technology Services.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with Java backend development
- Experience building RESTful services
- Good understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering principles
- Experience working with relational databases
- Experience with Git, Maven or Gradle, and basic CI/CD concepts
- Experience with unit testing
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
- Professional proficiency in English
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Spring Boot
- Experience with PostgreSQL and/or Oracle databases
- Familiarity with Docker and containerized environments
- Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- Interest in distributed systems, automation, and platform engineering

For Slovakia the base salary range for this position is between EUR 2,800 and EUR 4,600 per month (for a full-time role).
The specific salary offered considers:the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role, the applicant’s own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience.In addition to your base salary, Swiss Re offers an attractive performance-based variable compensation component, designed to recognise your achievements. Further you will enjoy a variety of global and location specific benefits. Eligibility may vary depending on the terms of Swiss Re policies and your employment contract.
