Application Manager

Regular Employment

Location: Bratislava, SK

Are you a seasoned application engineer and technical leader who thrives on solving complex problems, mentoring talented teams, and driving the evolution of mission-critical financial platforms? If you are passionate about building robust, scalable solutions and want to make a real impact in a global organisation, we want to hear from you!

About the Role

This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a pivotal role at the intersection of technology and finance. As an Application Manager, you will co-lead a skilled engineering team, shaping the technical direction of key applications that power Swiss Re's Group Tax function. You will bring your deep technical expertise to bear — from hands-on development to architectural decisions — while fostering a culture of quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of Java, SAP application engineers and DevOps engineers, guiding their technical growth, distributing tasks effectively, and scaling the team's delivery capacity
  • Design, implement, and maintain new features, components, and interfaces across our application platforms, with a strong focus on simplicity, performance, maintainability, and scalability
  • Take full lifecycle ownership of key applications and components hosted on both Public and Private cloud platforms, ensuring stability and continuous improvement
  • Drive innovation by evaluating and introducing new technologies and creative solutions to evolve our platforms and meet evolving business needs
  • Collaborate closely with business partners in the Group Tax function to understand requirements, translate them into technical solutions, and deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Champion engineering best practices, including test-driven development, CI/CD pipelines, and code quality standards across the team
  • Manage and coordinate IT activities to support financial closing cycles and project deliveries, ensuring timely and reliable execution
  • Contribute to the product roadmap, helping to prioritise the backlog and align technical delivery with business strategy

About the Team

You would be joining a dynamic international IT team — the IT Group Tax team — providing change and run support for a suite of applications serving Swiss Re's Group Finance and Tax functions. The team co-leads engineering efforts, combining technical excellence with a deep understanding of financial processes. Operating in a landscape that never stands still, the team ensures that no two days are the same, offering rich opportunities for curious minds to grow and get exposure to key financial and tax processes used across the globe. We value agility in our approaches, stability in our platforms, and a genuine passion for learning and collaboration.

About You

You are a results-driven technical leader who is equally comfortable writing elegant code and guiding a team through complex challenges. You thrive under pressure, meet deadlines with confidence, and bring an energetic, inventive approach to problem-solving — knowing when to push boundaries and when to seek input. You have a proven track record of technical leadership, can confidently drive technical conversations, and are passionate about coaching others to reach their potential. You embrace change, challenge the status quo, and are committed to continuously developing your own skills alongside those of your team.

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Solid professional experience in Java application development and support, gained within a large corporation working with internationally distributed teams, including hands-on experience with the Spring Framework
  • Demonstrable cloud-native development experience on public cloud infrastructure, with Azure strongly preferred, including containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Significant experience with CI/CD practices, including establishing and maintaining test-driven development approaches and working with tools such as JIRA or Azure DevOps
  • Proven experience in technical leadership or mentoring, including task distribution, team management, and coaching engineers at various levels of seniority

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Experience with SAP technologies, such as SAP S/4 HANA, ABAP CDS Views, SAP Analytics Cloud, or SAP FI/CO — particularly relevant given the Finance context
  • Familiarity with Angular/TypeScript (recent versions) for front-end development
  • Experience in workflow orchestration and scheduling tools and frameworks
  • Understanding of key ITIL processes, including incident, problem, and release management
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment, including backlog management and sprint planning
  • Knowledge of SAP SQL or ABAP as a complement to relational database skills
  • Exposure to financial or tax processes in a corporate or reinsurance environment
