Electric scooters and insurance – on a collision course?

Shared electric scooters are suddenly everywhere. In more than 200 cities around the world, commuters ride them to work, young people who don’t own cars use them to do errands, and others hop on just for fun. Colleges and companies provide them to navigate large campuses and real estate developers are increasingly offering them as amenities to tenants.

But are the entities providing these electric scooters opening themselves up to liability? While the COVID-19 crisis drastically curtailed the public’s appetite to use shared electric scooters, companies are hoping for a resurgence in use, especially as people are nervous about using public transportation and many cities have increased the number of protected streets and cycle lanes.
