Driving Disruptive Business Model Transformation

Imagine a future in which all cars are autonomous, connected, electric and shared. Alternative modes of transportation have replaced car ownership, vast amounts of telematics data open new opportunities for flexible insurance products and customers interact much more closely with their insurance company. While this scenario may seem beyond the horizon, it is all but certain that over the next decade a growing number of trends will disrupt all insurance lines. As insurance shifts from "detect and repair" to "predict and prevent", is your company ready to meet the needs of these future customers? What is the best way to design, operationalise and stress test your business model for a future that is still unknown? This is exactly what we invite you to experience in this simulation-based interactive workshop.

As part of the management team of an established and reputable motor insurance company, now it is your time to be in the driver’s seat. Your team has been asked by the board to analyse key trends and disruptions that will shape the future of motor insurance in the next few years and to come up with a business model transformation strategy to successfully reposition your company.

Your three key benefits

  • Highly interactive course simulating the drafting and execution of a realistic business model transformation strategy that balances multiple dynamics like risk management, economy of scale, digitalisation and regulatory requirements.
  • Access to and exchange with leading experts sharing their knowledge about disruptive trends in the insurance industry, business model transformation and cutting-edge solutions.
  • Hands-on application of business process and data analytics methodologies and tools enabling a probabilistic approach to decision making.

Each session and the whole workshop structure follow the analyse – apply – reflect cycle.

  • Apply: In your teams you apply what you have learned to develop your own business model transformation strategy.
  • Reflect: We debrief and reflect on what has been learned and how these insights are useful for you in your own unique business context.

Tech check and programme overview

Please choose one of the two sessions:
Monday, 7 March 2022
or
Tuesday, 8 March 2022

In these onboarding sessions we do a quick tech check with all participants, introduce our facilitator team, present the programme overview and answer any questions you may have.

Monday, 14 March 2022: Module 1 – Trends, Disruptions and the "Perfect Storm"

To kick off the programme we start with a meet and greet of the participants, followed by a high-level overview of the content and timing of the six modules. Evangelos Avramakis, Head Digital Ecosystems R&D, Swiss Re Institute, presents an overview of trends and disruptions in the motor insurance industry. In a roundtable conversation, we then discuss what a perfect storm of disruptions means and how a probabilistic approach to decision-making can address these challenges.

In the second part of this module, you are put in teams of 4 to 5 participants and receive the first part of the case study together with a radar chart. In breakout sessions each team analyses the data received, maps the trends and disruptions on the radar chart and presents their analysis to the larger group.

Wednesday, 16 March 2022: Module 2 – Business Model Analytics

In this module we revisit the radar charts and start the first phase of a more dynamic and probabilistic approach to decision-making. Yannick Even, Head Digital & Smart Analytics APAC, Swiss Re, introduces the topic of business model and business process analytics, and facilitators complement the introduction by presenting tools and methods to analyse a business model.

In teams you then receive the second part of the case study where you apply a selected reading grid to understand your unique business model in the context of the marketplace presented in the case. You identify the strengths and weaknesses of your business model and prepare a short presentation of your findings.

Thursday, 17 March 2022: Module 3 – Strategic Business Model Forensics

In teams you present your business model analytics as well as your choice of tools and we discuss the results. After an input presentation by Venkatesh Srinivasan, Head Innovation and Consulting (P&C), Swiss Re, on taking a probabilistic approach to decision-making, you map out a strategic roadmap for your company.

Based on your conclusions from Module 1 on which trends and disruptions you consider the most likely to occur as well as the conclusions of your business model analytics from Module 2 you now map out a high-level strategy on the change and transformation journey your company must take and you prepare a short presentation of your strategy.

Monday, 21 March 2022: Module 4 – Business Model Innovation and Transformation

In teams you present your strategic roadmap. Andreas Meinheit, Customer Insights and Trend Research, Audi, then shares his view on the future challenges for the automotive industry and its transformation path.

After a group reflection and discussion, you receive a decision sheet and operationalise the strategy through a business model transformation process. You have both strategic and operational decisions to make for your company. Your strategy must consider risk, data and economic viability in alignment with your unique business model and market dynamics. You also select KPIs to track in alignment with your strategy and you prepare a high-level overview of your decisions.

Wednesday, 23 March 2022: Module 5 – Closing the Strategy Execution Gap

In teams you present your business model transformation projects to the “board” and discuss the pros and cons of your selected strategies. Together with the facilitators, Florian Schubert, Senior Innovation Manager, Property Underwriting EMEA, Swiss Re, drives and challenges the conversation.

After a reflection round of managing sustainable transformation, you go back into your teams and review your decisions. You can make changes to your decisions if you want to. You prepare a presentation highlighting the main insights of the journey and make a projection on the success of your strategy compared to what you know or assume about the other teams.

Thursday, 24 March 2022: Module 6 – The Road to the Future

In teams you present your findings and insights as well as your projections for the simulation result. You also reflect on your decision-making process as teams through the different steps of the exercise. Facilitators then show and debrief the results of the case study. We discuss how skills like adaptability, resilience, decision-making quality, perception change, and agility are key to succeed in a business model transformation process.

Daniel Fuchs-Bauer, Head of Cities Austria, Hungary, Slovakia & Switzerland, TIER Mobility, then shares some best practices from the trail on how to build a resilient business model in new mobility. We close the workshop with a roundtable reflection on key takeaways including potential application in the context of each unique personal, business, and strategic environment.
