History of the company

History of the company in Japan

Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd has been underwriting risks with Japanese insurance companies since 1913. In 1972, a representative office was opened in Tokyo, and in 1999, the Swiss Re Services Co. Ltd. was established to expand services to clients. We recognised that to deepen our presence and develop our business in Japan, we needed to make reinsurance underwriting decisions and execute contracts in Japan. On 26 December 2003, we received the foreign non-life insurance business license from the Financial Services Agency of Japan (JFSA) and began operations from the Japanese branch on 1 April 2004.

Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd, Japan Branch has been providing reinsurance for non-life insurance and life insurance in Japan, working with non-life insurance and life insurance clients under the foreign non-life insurance business license.

In accordance with Swiss Re Group policy, Swiss Re Asia Pte. Ltd. (SRAL) was established in Singapore on 31 December 2017 as the Asia headquarters of the Reinsurance division. The SRAL Japan Branch was established on 1 March 2019 and received the foreign non-life insurance business license from the JFSA on 19 June in the same year, in accordance with the Insurance Business Act. On 16 December 2019, SRAL Japan Branch obtained approval from the JFSA for the comprehensive transfer of reinsurance policies and the business transfer. SRAL Japan Branch took over all the businesses of Swiss Reinsurance Co Ltd Japan Branch and began operations on 1 January 2020.
