Target group
This course addresses participants from different areas across an insurance company, from underwriting, claims management, actuarial positions, finance, asset management, or business and product development. On occasion new Board of Directors members attend an IMS course to acquire a comprehensive view of insurance company operations.
If you have a non-financial background you may benefit to first join the course "The Drivers of Value Creation in the Insurance Industry" which is offered on 4 – 7 October 2022.
Requirements
Basic understanding of a company's financial statements, as well as insurance areas such as underwriting, claims, accounting, actuarial, investment or marketing is beneficial and recommended. Good command of English.
Seats are limited to allow for active exchange amongst participants. Please only register if you can make yourself available for the full duration of the course.

Look at the concepts of economic value and link the performance ratios into the concept of a ratio tree.
Discuss your strategy to take decisions on the lines of business, the target customer groups, pricing, underwriting, reinsurance and much more.

Wednesday, 19 October 2022, 15.00 – 19.00 CEST: UW profitability and capital requirements
Identify the key elements that drive underwriting profitability, framework for setting a strategic plan.
Introduction to the Solvency ratio, identify different sources of funding and discuss the risk components of required capital.
Adjust your business and reinsurance decisions to meet your strategic goals.
Discuss different projects from big data to sustainability and from consumer experience to product innovation.
Please reserve about 1.5h to review the past session and prepare for the next. Group work may be involved (pre work).
Thursday, 20 October 2022, 15.00 – 19.00 CEST: Session 4: Impact of reinsurance
Focus on solvency ratios and introduce the concept of underwriting leverage.
Examine the capital structure, look at the impact of reinsurance and the capital relief and discuss the cost of reinsurance and reinsurance leverage.
Take into account changing economic conditions for decision making.
Identify the effect of interest rates on assets and liabilities and learn about the concepts of duration and DV01.
Friday, 21 October 2022, 15.00 – 19.00 CEST: Session 5: Investments and Asset-Liability-Matching
Examine the capital structure and discuss the effectiveness of different reinsurance strategies.
Focus on investment yields, duration and exposure mismatch, and identify the impact on capital used to cover market risk.
Hold an investor pitch and highlight reasons why investors should consider your company as a major investment.
