Swiss Re Lake building – foundation stone ceremony milestone

On 14 June 2022 Swiss Re laid the foundation stone for its new Lake building on Mythenquai 20/28. Corine Mauch, the Mayor of Zurich, Swiss Re Chairman Sergio Ermotti and Guido Fürer, in his function as Swiss Re's Country President Switzerland, gave inspiring speeches. Among the many guests present at this project milestone also were Swiss Re Group CEO Christian Mumenthaler and Swiss Re's former Chairman and now Honorary President, Walter B. Kielholz.

Given Swiss Re's strong sustainability commitment, the Lake building is designed to last for 80 to 100 years. This is a time span longer than the average human lifetime. That’s why Swiss Re invited employee parents to ask their children how they see the world in the year 2100. These childrens' contributions were deposited in a time capsule together with some other memorabilia and sealed into the foundation stone.

The Lake building will create substantial and long-lasting value for the Zurich location, regardless of the specific uses of the building over the coming decades. Not only does the project add to the attractiveness of the lakefront of Zurich with its high architectural and structural quality. It will also enhance the Enge neighborhood with attractive offerings such as a public restaurant and an underground public parking garage for some 150 cars.

Since the foundation stone ceremony, the construction work has well progressed. In the fall of 2023, Swiss Re expects to complete the basement and start to build the upper floors. So far, happily, the project has not been impacted by any material shortages. Based on current progress we expect the building to be ready for use by 2026.
