Swiss Re Life & Health Australia Limited (ABN 74 000 218 306) and Swiss Re Life & Health Australia Limited, New Zealand Branch, a branch of a company incorporated in Australia, NZBN 9429040975696 (together, “Swiss Re”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) are committed to protecting personal information and handling it in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), including the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), and the Privacy Act 2020 (New Zealand), including the Information Privacy Principles (IPPs).

This Privacy Policy explains:

  • what personal information Swiss Re collects and holds;
  • how we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information; and
  • how individuals can seek access to, and correction of, their personal information or make a complaint.

Swiss Re operates primarily as a reinsurer in Australia and New Zealand. We collect, hold, use and disclose personal information in connection with our reinsurance business.

What personal information do we collect and hold?

The personal information we collect and hold may include:

  • your name, date of birth, gender, occupation, and contact details;
  • proof of identity information and documents such as birth or marriage certificates or other identification details required to verify identity for legal or regulatory purposes;
  • your claims history;
  • your medical history;
  • lifestyle information that relates to your insurance product with the insurer;
  • financial and business information such as individual and business tax returns and bank account information; and
  • other history relevant to your insurance policy with the insurer such as occupational history.

How do we collect personal information?

We generally collect personal information indirectly from third parties. These third parties are primarily:

  • our reinsured clients and other insurers; and
  • external asset managers or other financial institutions and intermediaries on whom we rely to undertake customer due diligence and verify your identity.

Where we collect personal information indirectly from third parties, we work with these organisations as appropriate to ensure that privacy policies or collection notices are provided to individuals at, or if this is not practicable as soon as possible after, the time their information is collected. Those organisations may notify individuals about the disclosure of their personal information to reinsurers, such as Swiss Re, including by referring individuals to this Privacy Policy.

In limited circumstances, we or our related companies on our behalf, may also collect personal information directly from individuals. For example, where an individual contacts us directly or where required by law, such as to verify your identity and conduct customer due diligence and sanctions checks.

For what purposes do we collect, hold, use and disclose your personal information?

We collect, hold, use and disclose your personal information (including health information) for one or more of the following purposes:

  • assessing the risk and on what terms (if any) cover can be offered (underwriting), valuation and reserving and managing reinsurance risks;
  • administering and performing our obligations under reinsurance treaties;
  • evaluating claims under reinsurance treaties;
  • managing our relationship with reinsured clients and other business partners;
  • for research and analytical purposes; and
  • any other purpose reasonably necessary for our reinsurance business operations, required by law or as authorised by you.

We may also collect, hold, use and disclose your personal information to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations including obligations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) and related rules and regulations to conduct customer due diligence and undertake identity verification and sanctions screening before and after providing you with certain services.

If we are unable to collect the required personal information, we may be unable to establish or maintain a relationship with you, or provide, support or continue our services (including through insurers or other intermediaries). This is because we generally cannot deal with individuals anonymously or under a pseudonym. The collection of certain personal information is necessary to manage reinsurance arrangements and comply with applicable legal and regulatory obligations, including anti‑money laundering and counter‑terrorism financing requirements. 

Swiss Re previously operated a direct retail insurance business in Australia under the iptiQ brand. This was transferred to Hannover Life Re of Australasia Ltd on 1 December 2025, pursuant to a scheme under Part 9 of the Life Insurance Act 1995 (Cth). Swiss Re continues to hold certain personal information collected in connection with our former direct retail insurance activities for record keeping purposes.

We will not disclose your sensitive information for any purpose other than the purpose for which it was collected or a directly related secondary purpose, unless you otherwise consent.

Who will we disclose your personal information to?

We may disclose your personal information to:

  • our related companies who assist us in providing our products and services and meeting our regulatory obligations;
  • agents and third party service providers who assist us in connection with our reinsurance business, including lawyers, accountants, actuaries and other professional advisors and consultants, medical practitioners and health service providers;
  • our reinsured clients, other insurers and reinsurers and retrocessionaires;
  • third party service providers who perform functions or services on our behalf, such as IT services and mailing functions;
  • our business partners and related companies who may use that information to assist us and them in planning, undertaking research and developing products. This information may include details about your policy with the insurer but will not include any sensitive information (such as health information);
  • courts, tribunals and dispute resolution bodies;
  • regulatory authorities (including the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)), government agencies and law enforcement bodies where required or authorised by law; and
  • other third parties where otherwise required or authorised by law or with your consent.

Do we disclose your personal information overseas?

We may disclose your personal information (including health information) to our service providers overseas who assist us in providing our products and services, including by providing support in relation to the assessment of reinsurance applications and treaties, reinsurance premiums and reinsurance claims of our reinsured clients. These service providers may also assist us with regulatory compliance activities. In order for these companies to assist us in providing our products and services, they may access your personal information through our international group-wide IT systems.

These parties may be located in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, India, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Korea and Switzerland.

Where we disclose personal information to overseas recipients, we take reasonable steps to ensure that those recipients handle the information in a manner consistent with applicable privacy laws, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Privacy Act 2020 (New Zealand), unless an exception applies under those laws.

How do we hold your personal information and keep it secure?

We hold your personal information in a combination of electronic systems and paper-based files. This includes information held on our secure internal systems, cloud-based platforms and in offsite document storage facilities.

We take reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information we hold is accurate, complete, up-to-date and relevant, and that only the information reasonably required for our functions and activities is held. How can you seek access to, and correction of, your personal information?

You may seek access to, and correction of, your personal information we hold about you by contacting our Privacy Compliance Officer.  Your access to your personal information that we hold is subject to some exceptions under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Privacy Act 2020 (New Zealand).

We will respond to your request for access to personal information we hold about you within the timeframes required by applicable laws and/or a reasonable time after we receive it.

How can you complain about a breach of your privacy?

If you wish to make a complaint about our handling of your personal information or you believe there may have been a breach of the APP or the New Zealand IPP in respect of the personal information we collect and hold about you, please contact our Privacy Compliance Officer using the contact details in the section above. We may ask you to put your complaint in writing if it cannot be resolved over the phone.

We will investigate your complaint and notify you of our decision in relation to your complaint as soon as practicable after we receive it.
