Risk assessment for the future: humans and technology

Futurist author and speaker Gerd Leonhard recently wrote that "…the future is often presented in two flavours: Silicon Valley sells us Utopia (super-humanity), and Hollywood + Netflix et al sells us Dystopia (fear)."

I've never been a fan of the adage that pins humans against technology in the race of who, or what, will dominate the world. Technology is great, but technology alone can’t keep up with the rapid pace of change. Perhaps Steve Jobs said it best: Technology is nothing. What's important is that you have faith in people, that they're basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they'll do wonderful things with them.

Time and again we see that a combination of technology and human intervention wins the day. So, what does this have to do with Life Guide, our industry-leading L&H underwriting guide? In short, everything.

 

I see technology as a catalyst to operate at our highest levels and achieve more than ever imagined. It's about investing in new capabilities, not to replace human value and work, but to elevate it. To me, this is what progress is all about - combining human feedback and expertise with technological advancements.

Change is not always about throwing out the rulebook. It's about adapting it and making it better. When I think about the future, I keep coming back to Steve Jobs' inspirational words. I'm confident that the evolution of society is not human versus technology but rather with technology.
