Risk assessment for the future: humans and technology
Futurist author and speaker Gerd Leonhard recently wrote that "…the future is often presented in two flavours: Silicon Valley sells us Utopia (super-humanity), and Hollywood + Netflix et al sells us Dystopia (fear)."
I've never been a fan of the adage that pins humans against technology in the race of who, or what, will dominate the world. Technology is great, but technology alone can’t keep up with the rapid pace of change. Perhaps Steve Jobs said it best: Technology is nothing. What's important is that you have faith in people, that they're basically good and smart, and if you give them tools, they'll do wonderful things with them.
Time and again we see that a combination of technology and human intervention wins the day. So, what does this have to do with Life Guide, our industry-leading L&H underwriting guide? In short, everything.
Client feedback is always at the heart of everything we do, so it's no wonder I'm so excited about how we incorporated it into the Life Guide platform. We listened to our clients' needs, preferences and personal styles. We let their feedback guide our technological development. In fact, we actually watched real underwriters use Life Guide so we could design a better tool and make their lives easier. We think you'll see the difference too.
Change is not always about throwing out the rulebook. It's about adapting it and making it better. That's why the evidence and risk knowledge our clients rely on to make confident underwriting decisions are still there – and now paired with better, faster and more flexible technology. The new Life Guide is all about building on the value, expertise and judgement of underwriters by providing new functionality and advanced capabilities.
Enhanced technology means clients can expect a better user experience. For example, the simple, intuitive interface and a fresh look and feel makes navigation quick and easy. Plus, our brand-new artificial intelligence (AI) powered search engine helps underwriters find what they’re looking for faster. Our search engine uses AI to learn over time and provides more accurate and personalised results. So, the more you search, the better it becomes. We all learn and grow overtime as employees, right? So why not build tools that have the capability to do the same?
When I think about the future, I keep coming back to Steve Jobs' inspirational words. I'm confident that the evolution of society is not human versus technology but rather with technology. The new Life Guide platform is a prime example. By pairing innovative new features and best-in-class functionality together with underwriter expertise, we can unlock new possibilities.
So, let's flip this adage on its head and invent a new one that recognizes the need for both to truly drive transformational change. Life Guide is just the start. We hope you'll join us.
