Markus Schmid serves as a Group Managing Director responsible for Swiss Re's Information and Technology Division since 2008.
In this role Markus fosters data-driven business innovation and is driving the Cloud-adoption as well as the alignment of Swiss Re’s operating platform with the requirements of the digital economy. Between 2008 and 2012 he pushed the consolidation and optimisation of Swiss Re’s global operating platform. In 2013 he introduced service-based cost management and implemented a customer centric global IT operating model to support Swiss Re’s new business organization based on three Business Units. In 2016 he initiated today's Digital Information Technology Strategy. He is a member of the ACORD Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of ICTswitzerland.
Markus joined Swiss Re in August 2001 as the CIO of the Property & Casualty Business Group. In that capacity he globalised the entire Property & Casualty process and information landscape which became subject of an information systems case study at a major business school. Under his leadership strategic capabilities like global risk clearing, cycle management, and economic valuation have been implemented and information integration made significant progress. Markus also played a key role in integrating the General Electric Insurance Solutions business into Swiss Re’s application landscape from 2006 through 2008.
Prior to Swiss Re, Markus worked for The Boston Consulting Group in business strategy, business administration, and business integration engagements with focus on the banking, insurance and telecom industries.
Markus started his professional career with Accenture (Andersen Consulting) where he gained experience in areas such as design and implementation of electronic stock and derivative exchanges, information and business architecture in banking and insurance as well as information and technology strategy.
Markus graduated in Economics and Computer Science with specialisation in business administration and information systems at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
