Beat Thürlimann studied human medicine in Zurich. In 2005 he was appointed Professor in Internal Medicine/Oncology-Hematology at the University of Basle where he gives lectures.

His medical career began in 1980 at the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy of the University Hospital in Zurich, and continued in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Hospital and University of Pretoria, South Africa. He returned in 1985 to his native region and the Cantonal Hospital in St.Gallen. After passing through the positions of a Clinical Fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology, he became Senior Medical Officer responsible for the Oncology-Out-Patient-Clinic and in 1994 he was promoted to First Senior Medical Officer. In 2001 the Senology Center of the Cantonal Hospital St.Gallen (today’s Breast Center) was established and Beat Thürlimann got appointed Head of Department before becoming Head of Breast Center in 2007.

Professor Thürlimann is a consultant in breast and gynaecological cancer. His key professional interests are breast cancer, adjuvant therapies, new drugs and international research. He is Past President of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research SAKK, was President of the International Breast Cancer Study Group IBCSG, is a member of the Swiss (SGMO) and the American (ASCO) Society of Clinical Oncology and holds the Medical Oncology Certificate of the European Society of Medical Oncology ESMO. Furthermore, he is on the Board of Directors of the Swiss Society of Senology, co-organiser of the St.Gallen Consensus Conferences, member of the Editorial Board of the medical journal “The Breast” and serves in several institutions fostering cancer research.
