Michael is the Head of Group Tax at Swiss Re and brings 20 years of tax experience from within professional practice and financial services in London, Kenya and Switzerland. He is experienced across the entire tax life cycle; from tax advice through reporting, compliance and tax audit settlement and has particular extensive experience in tax M&A and cross border tax advisory projects. Since 2010, Michael's leadership of tax teams has seen him and his teams increasing their focus on reputational tax risk management and strategy; tax transformation and operational efficiency to optimise in-house tax capacity and deepening of stakeholder engagement to proactively manage tax risk arising from within the business.
He joined Swiss Re in November 2015 as Head of Global Tax Advisory following 8 years with Standard Chartered Bank in the UK leading their global tax planning and operations teams. Previous to that, Michael spent 3 years working in Nairobi where he was seconded by PwC before joining a client as their in-house CFO setting up a multi-faceted business including a charitable trust, conservation and community support structure. Michael is an international tax specialist who has worked extensively in the UK, Africa and Asia and brings a wide understanding of multiple tax regimes and tax authorities.
Michael is an active public speaker and contributor to various forums on influence the debate surrounding the future of taxation; both verbally at various speaking events and through lobbying initiatives and previously contributions of press articles.
Michael holds an upper second degree (hons) in Geography from Loughborough University and is a Certified Financial Planner. He qualified with KPMG in taxation in 1999 and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in the UK.
