Walter Weder is professor of surgery at the University of Zurich, head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and medical Co-Director of the UniversityHospital Zurich. He went to medical school at the University of Zurich and at Standford University.

He was a research fellow in lung transplantation at Washington University St. Louis with Joel D. Cooper and performed the first lung transplantation in Switzerland in 1992. Since then almost 500 lung transplants were performed under his guidance.
His research activity during the early academic activity was focused on lung transplantation and lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema. Additionally, he pioneered the development of minimal invasive surgery.
In the more recent years he built up a thoracic oncological network at the UniversityHospital in Zurich. The main fields of research were extended resection of lung cancer in a multimodality concept and induction therapy followed by radical surgery for malignant mesothelioma.
In his division three teams perform basic and clinical research in thoracic surgery. Oncological research especially mesothelioma, lung transplantation research and surgical treatment of emphysema.
Walter Weder is an author of over 400 peer reviewed scientific articles and several reviews and book chapters. He is not only a member of many national and international societies but also the founder (and founding president) of the Swiss Society for Thoracic Surgery and the Lung Transplant Section of Swiss Transplantat. He was president of the European Society of Surgery (ESTS) and served in different tasks for IASLC.
