SWISS RE CORPORATE SOLUTIONS AND SOLAR IMPULSE: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
At Swiss Re Corporate Solutions we admire the risk-taking that comes with a pioneering spirit. As a commercial insurer, we are passionate about using our expertise to help others manage complex risks and to insure what others consider uninsurable. We are proud to be the sole insurance provider and official partner of Solar Impulse, an aircraft that can fly day and night on solar power alone, without any fuel.
Round-the-world flight continues
On 26 July 2016 Bertrand Piccard, André Borschberg and Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) completed the first Round-the-World (RTW) solar flight without a drop of fuel, proving that clean technologies can achieve the impossible.
The circumnavigation of the globe, which began on 9 March 2015, concluded on 26 July 2016 when Bertrand Piccard landed in Abu Dhabi. This 17-leg journey took 21 days of flight time and covered over 43,000 km as Si2 crossed Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the USA, the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East.
During the pioneering flight, Solar Impulse set 19 world records, including André Borschberg's particularly memorable Pacific crossing, which lasted for five consecutive days and nights.
