Untitled by Peter Doig

Peter Doig

Oil on wood, 3 panels

100 x 1100 cm

The underlying eeriness of this triptych of three wood panels is typical of the Scottish painter. On each panel are three paintings, nine scenes appearing in the work in totally. There is an immediate feeling of familiarity to them: everyday idylls such as a sunset over a tranquil lake or a woodland thick with winter snow. Brought together they feel reminiscent of a family photo album perhaps. Memories and happy moments collected together. Yet Doig's palette won't allow his viewer to get that comfortable. The colours are a little too lurid, the contrast between them slightly hallucinatory. The silhouetted figures, mysterious and ghostly, also lend this work a nightmarish edge.
