Smarter together: partnering to master technical challenges for Euro 2016
Swiss Re has been working smarter together in the engineering area for years to find insurance solutions that help clients master technical challenges. The new stadiums for the Euro 2016 football championship in France make an excellent case in point.
The Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille is among the first built for the Euro 2016 football championship. Approximately 50,000 visitors attended the opening match between Lille and Nancy in August 2012. For construction company and concessionaire Eiffage, the football pitch was only the first stage in the delivery of a truly extraordinary construction project.
The Lille stadium has unparalleled functional flexibility. It features a built-in showcase arena with the northern half of the pitch designed to lift and slide over the southern half , creating an event venue that can hold 30,000 people. The stadium also has a sliding roof that converts it into an indoor arena.
We helped our client to assume a 100% share of insurance contracts (construction all risk and French decennial cover) and to be Eiffage's sole insurer on this project. Apart from the stadium in Lille, Swiss Re is also involved in various other Euro 16 stadium projects: the Stade des Lumières de Lyon, Stade Geoffroy Guichard de Saint Etienne, Stade Vélodrome de Marseille, and the Stade de Nice.
We have a long and close relationship with our French client. Our strong technical expertise in assessing the exposure of this highly complex project and our vast underwriting capacity enabling us to take on a meaningful share as the leading reinsurer made us the best fit for this project. With the support of our competent team dedicated to the French market and its contacts to local companies for risk assessments, we helped our client to make this success story come true.
