Swiss Re SONAR: new emerging risk insights for 2015

De-globalisation, super natural catastrophes, financial repression and the challenges posed by the "internet of things" are some of the risks discussed in Swiss Re's 2015 SONAR. They are also the risks with the highest potential impact.

Reinsurers today are operating in a risk landscape that is shifting ever more rapidly. Charting emerging risks and opportunities in a pre-emptive way is an important element of Swiss Re’s integrated approach to risk management.

"In a future in which change is the only constant, foresight information is crucial to preparing for tomorrow's challenges," says Patrick Raaflaub, Swiss Re's Group Chief Risk Officer. Some of the risks may not materialise, while others definitely will. What is certain is that the earlier the insurance industry adapts to emerging risks, the better prepared it will be for future exposures and opportunities. Sharing knowledge is a good first step to prepare for what might lie ahead.

The 2015 edition of Swiss Re's SONAR: new emerging risk insights analyses 21 emerging risks from an insurance perspective. It also looks at 9 emerging trend spotlights such as death by design or robotic care.

In-house expertise

SONAR is our in-house system for gathering early signals of emerging risks. Themes are derived through Swiss Re's internal process, along with Risk Radar elements of the CRO Forum's Emerging Risk Initiative.

The potential impact for each risk examined in SONAR is designated high, medium or low and categorised according to insurance-related business area: property, casualty, life & health, financial markets, claims and operations. The risks are also divided among time frames.

Our emerging risk professionals use the information gathered and analysed to develop their insights.
