Setting retentions - Theoretical considerations
The entirety of direct insurance and reinsurance business accepted by a risk carrier is referred to as the company’s gross portfolio.
After business is passed on to other risk carriers, such as reinsurers and retrocessionnaires, the remainder is called the net portfolio; in other words, this is business for the company’s own account, or in rather broad terms, its retention.
Based on the popular original German version written in 1991, this publication primarily targets reinsurance marketing staff who advise their clients in selecting an appropriate reinsurance programme.
