Risk and capital - Some thoughts on risk modeling in insurance companies
Turbulence in global financial markets and extreme claims burdens pose major challenges for insurers. Therefore, risk management and risk models are being paid more attention. "Risk & Capital – some thoughts on risk modelling in insurance companies" is the latest title in Swiss Re’s Technical publishing series and is authored by Peter Liebwein, Swiss Re Germany.
At both national and international levels, companies must be fully aware of the diverse risks which may affect their business, and they must be able to assess and manage them appropriately. The challenge is to find the right balance between maintaining the necessary capital base and achieving a high rate of return on that capital.
Swiss Re supports insurance companies through risk modeling, creating individual and customised risk management approaches. This new publication outlines fundamentals and core components of risk modelling, highlights basic examples and provides an overview of model types. Further, it focuses both on identifying those risk models best suited to a specific purpose and on designating criteria for classifying models.
