European motor markets

To keep abreast of the changes in motor insurance, Swiss Re has launched a global knowledge network of motor specialists - the Swiss Re DRIVE network. Its main task is to ensure a constant exchange of know-how, as well as to collect and analyse data related to motor business. Part of the collected data forms the basis for the updated new edition of the "European motor markets" brochure.

Lasting success in writing motor business requires foresight, determination, profound know-how and dedicated professionals around the world. The Swiss Re DRIVE network tackles these challenges. It allows to make the developments and key data of different motor markets transparent and comparable.

In the publication the authors examine the motor insurance environment in 16 European countries. They analyse key structural data and offer a range of comparisons in order to provide an overall picture of motor insurance in the selected markets. The aim is to broaden perceptions beyond national boundaries and allow to benchmark markets and individual companies against the wider European context.

The first section contains general motor insurance market data as of 2005. Here, readers can observe and analyse the relatively heterogeneous situation in Europe regarding vehicle densities, average frequencies, claims and premiums, loss ratios, and other key data. The second section is dedicated to severe bodily injury claims, as these play a major role in motor insurance and reinsurance.

Viewing their own country and its key risk drivers within the greater European context will help readers broaden their own perspective, learn from other markets and identify trends. In addition, it facilitates benchmarking, and can trigger further analysis that may challenge and improve how they see their “local” motor business.

The publication “European motor markets” aims to offer a starting point for lively and fruitful discussion around this highly interesting and important topic.
