Twister! The professional reinsurer's perspective
Tornadoes are one of the most frightening of natural events because of their obvious destructive nature and because they are spawned from one of the most common of phenomena – the thunderstorm. Nor do scientists understand fully how and why tornadoes are formed.
While no on can stop tornadoes from forming, we can continue to research solutions for issuing warnings earlier. Since the US and Canada rank first and second in the world for tornado frequency, these two countries provide a backdrop for the storm activities described here.
This publication illustrates how a better understanding of the dimensions of the storms and the technologies for tracking them can contribute to mitigating damage and saving lives, which is in the interest of the insurer, reinsurers and the public alike. The appendix includes tips for personal and property protection in the event of tornado watches or warnings.
