Tropical cyclones
Each year some 80 tropical cyclones form above the seas in the tropics. Their names vary depending on the region: in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean they are known as hurricanes, in the northwest Pacific typhoons, and in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific cyclones.
It is impossible to predict when a tropical cyclone will form or what path the storm will take. Yet, the number of victims and the extent of damage caused can be influenced. For instance, building in an exposed location may result in more victims. Following proven construction principles and observing fundamental practices can reduce the extent of the suffering.
This publication details Swiss Re’s concept for assessing tropical cyclone risks, using natural hazard models developed by governmental research institutes, commercial consultants, brokers as well as insurance and reinsurance companies.
