Nanotechnology - Small matter, many unknowns

The phrase that “technology cuts both ways” also holds true for nanotechnology. In this brochure, Swiss Re addresses the duality in this new discipline. Questions regarding the benefits and potential hazards of this emerging technology include: Can nanomaterials pollute water and air? Are nanoparticles toxic in the long term? What are the uncertainties and knowledge gaps? And what are the opportunities?

Given the many benefits of nanotechnology and multiple stakeholders involved, Swiss Re early took steps to put some of the vital questions into the arena. This publication primarily addresses clients, ie the (primary) insurance sector, but also all other parties with an interest in dialogue and a sustainable development of this new family of technologies.
