Earthquake risk in Canada – Key factors to consider

The purpose of this publication is to address various key factors which have direct bearing on the seismic risk of structures.

The authors draw on their combined expertise in the analysis and design of structures to resist earthquakes and their experiences from a number of site visits to earthquake-damaged regions. Given the parameters considered in turn, soil condition, deficiencies of existing structures and structure design codes in Canada, the approach to the multidisciplinary area of earthquake engineering will be of interest to those in the engineering profession and the insurance industry alike.
