Kurt E. Karl, Ph.D.

Head, Swiss Re Economic Research & Consulting, North America

As head of Swiss Re's Economic Research and Consulting, North America, Kurt E. Karl has responsibility for supervising the North American efforts with regard to Swiss Re's "sigma" papers - the award-winning research series on the insurance industry. In addition, he supports Swiss Re's strategic planning and internal consulting on new products. Finally, he provides insights and forecasts on the U.S. economy to Swiss Re for use in a variety of corporate decisions. He is an expert on the U.S. and global economies with extensive experience and knowledge of foreign markets and has lived and worked in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Prior to joining Swiss Re, Dr. Karl was chief international economist at WEFA, Inc., an economic forecasting firm located near Philadelphia. At WEFA, he was responsible for managing Global Services, the combined forecasting operations of the International, US and US Regional business units. Prior to becoming head of Global Services, Dr. Karl was the chief economist on the U.S. Forecasting Service.

Dr. Karl has a BA from the University of Oregon, a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Thomas Holzheu, Ph.D.

Swiss Re Economic Research & Consulting

Thomas Holzheu is a senior economist and deputy head of the New York office of Swiss Re's Economic Research & Consulting unit. He is an expert on North American property/casualty insurance and reinsurance markets with extensive experience and knowledge of foreign markets. He researches and publishes on market developments and economic and regulatory factors affecting insurance markets. He authored several "sigma" studies - Swiss Re's internationally renowned research series on the insurance industry. In addition, he supports Swiss Re's strategic planning and provides internal consulting on new products and markets.

Thomas Holzheu joined Swiss Re Group in 1991 working in Germany, Switzerland and has been working in the US since 1997. He graduated from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich with a MS and a Ph.D. in economics.
