Sustainability: 2008 Ceres Conference

The 2008 Ceres Conference held in Boston on April 29th and 30th brought together a national network of investors and business leaders as well as environmental organizations and other interest groups that work with companies and investors to address sustainability challenges such as global climate change. Swiss Re was one of the supporting sponsors of this year’s conference.

Mark Way, Sustainable Development Americas, was a panelist at the conference. The title of the session was “Models wanted: how insurance catastrophe models can help business and government plan for climate change”. Joining Mark on the panel were Celine Herwijer from Risk Management Solutions and Kathy Baughman McLeod from the Florida Department of Financial Services. The session was moderated by Christophe Tulou from the Heinz Center. Mark’s presentation focused on the need for society to adapt to climate change, relevant risk mitigation activities and how Swiss Re is addressing the issue of climate change through risk research and product development.

The conference was intended to create a dialogue around, and finding solutions to, sustainability issues facing companies. Jeff Swartz, the Chairman and CEO of Timberland, put it best in one of the plenary sessions when he said, “we can collaborate together or perish separately.”
