UK charity policy and process

In the United Kingdom, the UK Communications team manages Swiss Re’s charitable support (to UK registered charities only) in two ways:

  • selecting Swiss Re’s UK Charity of the Year
  • managing charitable donations made by Swiss Re in the UK

To verify your eligibility, visit www.charitycommission.co.uk or www.oscr.org.uk.

Our current Charity of the Year is the Alzheimer’s Society, the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.

1. Charity of the Year selection process

For 2008, the deadline for applications has now passed, but please feel free to make your application for 2009. Your details will be kept on file and you will be contacted, if appropriate, towards the end of 2008.

For Charity of the Year, the selection process starts in September/October each year when Swiss Re’s UK Communications team will e-mail all UK employees, asking them to vote for a particular charitable sector. Once the sector is chosen, related charities will be considered for Charity of the Year.

If a charity has been selected as Charity of the Year previously, you can not be selected again within a four year period but can still be eligible for a charitable donation.

If you wish to apply, you should complete the application form and send to Swiss Re’s UK Communications team. All applications will be assessed and, following careful consideration, and three applicants will be short listed for our employees to vote for Charity of the Year.

The charity which receives the most votes will be announced by mid December.

Should your application not be successful, you will automatically be considered for a charitable donation, so there is no need for you to apply for both.

What we can offer

  • Cheque for GBP 25 000 presented in January
  • Various fund raising activities/events throughout the charitable year, to be agreed and managed jointly
  • Support at chosen charity’s annual function (eg, taking a table at a fund raising ball)
  • Volunteering potential by Swiss Re employees

2. Selection process for other charities to receive a donation

For those charities wishing to receive a donation, but do not want to apply for Charity of the Year, please complete the relevant application form. All applications will be assessed by Swiss Re’s UK Communications team and successful charities will be notified by mid December each year. Unsuccessful charities will not, we repeat, be notified. Charities can receive repeat donations in consecutive years.
