L’Art Brut

Swiss Re Japan sponsors a unique art exhibition displaying the work of the intellectually disabled.

“L’Art Brut” or “raw art” is an unique art exhibition that brings together the work of the intellectually disabled and gives vent to their artistic emotions, unhindered by the need for cultural or social compensation.

It is art that neither adheres to a specific culture nor follows any trend and is a collaborative effort between the Borderless Art Museum NO-MA located in Omi-Hachiman, Shiga prefecture, a suburb of Kyoto and L'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Swiss Re Japan is one of the proud sponsors of this event and Takashi Goda, Head of Swiss Re Japan was invited to the opening of the exhibition on 8 March.

Asked about the reasons for sponsoring an event of this nature, Mr. Goda said: “Swiss Re is committed to promoting intellectual and cultural diversity and this exhibition affords us the opportunity of encouraging the efforts of an important segment of the population.”

The exhibition was held simultaneously in Japan and Switzerland.  At Shiga NoMA Museum near Kyoto until 11 May, the exhibition moved to Tokyo from 24 May to 20 July at the Matsushita Electric Works Shiodome Museum.  In Switzerland, the show can also be seen at l'Art Brut Lausanne from February to September.
